Inside CodeMD: Why We Built a Physician-Led Supplement Company

Inside CodeMD: Why We Built a Physician-Led Supplement Company

We built CodeMD because we kept coming back to the same question:

Why are so many people making important health decisions without the kind of guidance they actually want?

Patients are already thinking about sleep, stress, nutrition, exercise, energy, immune health, and supplements. Many are searching online, comparing labels, listening to friends, or trying products recommended by people with very different levels of expertise.

We felt there was room for a company that took those decisions seriously.

CodeMD was created to bring physician judgment, scientific review, thoughtful formulation, and clear communication into a category where consumers are often left to sort through too much information on their own.

We Did Not Start With a Product

CodeMD did not begin with a finished formula.

It began with conversations.

Some were between us.

Some came from Israel’s experience as a physician.

Some came from watching friends and family try to make sense of products that promised a lot but explained very little.

The questions were familiar.

What should I take?

Does this ingredient actually do anything?

Is this dose enough?

Can I take this with something else?

Why does one product cost three times as much as another?

What does “clinically studied” really mean?

Should I even be taking this?

We realized that many consumers were not looking for more marketing.

They were looking for a way to make sense of the category.

That became the beginning of CodeMD.

A Physician Should Be More Than a Name on the Label

One of the things we decided early was that physician involvement had to mean something specific.

Israel was not going to appear at the end of the process, approve a finished formula, and lend his name to the box.

He needed to be involved while the product was still taking shape.

That means helping define the intended purpose of a formula.

Reviewing scientific literature.

Participating in ingredient and dosing discussions.

Working with technical and manufacturing partners.

Reviewing claims for scientific appropriateness.

Revisiting new evidence as research evolves.

We think consumers should be able to ask what “physician-developed” actually means and get a clear answer.

For us, it means participation.

Watch founders Lauren Wootton and Israel Wootton, MD share why they created CodeMD.

Why Israel Felt Physicians Needed to Be More Involved

For Israel, this idea became increasingly personal.

As a physician, he understands why many doctors are cautious around supplements.

The evidence can vary.

Products can differ significantly.

Patients may take multiple things without realizing how much they are getting in total.

Some claims reach far beyond what the research can actually support.

That hesitation is understandable.

But Israel also sees the other side.

Patients are already making these decisions.

They are asking questions about nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress, vitamins, minerals, botanicals, and other supplements whether physicians choose to participate or not.

He believes physicians can bring something valuable into that conversation: context.

“I do not think physicians need to recommend a supplement for every concern. But I do think we should be willing to talk with patients about what they are taking, why they are taking it, and what the evidence actually says. If patients are already making these decisions, I would rather help them make better ones than stay out of the conversation.”

— Israel Wootton, MD

That perspective became one of the strongest reasons for building CodeMD.

We Wanted to Build Around Questions, Not Trends

The supplement category moves quickly.

One ingredient becomes popular.

Then another.

A study circulates online.

A phrase starts appearing across dozens of products.

It would have been easy to build CodeMD around whatever consumers were already hearing about most.

We chose a different starting point.

What is the product intended to support?

What ingredients make sense for that purpose?

What does the evidence actually show?

What dose is relevant?

Can the formula be produced reliably?

Will people realistically use it?

Are the claims appropriate?

Those questions are less exciting than chasing a trend.

They are also more useful.

Science Has to Be More Than Decoration

We knew from the beginning that we wanted CodeMD to be science-backed.

But even that phrase needed a definition.

A citation on a website is not enough.

A paper can be real and still be irrelevant to the dose, form, population, or claim being made.

A study may be interesting without being conclusive.

A mechanism may be plausible without translating into a meaningful human outcome.

So we built our evidence standard around a more disciplined question:

Does the available research reasonably support the role we are asking this ingredient to play?

That means looking at study quality, human evidence where appropriate, dose, ingredient form, population, outcomes, and the broader body of research.

It also means being willing to say when the evidence is incomplete.

Our First Product Made the Philosophy Real

Immune health became one of the first areas where we chose to put this approach into practice.

It was familiar enough that almost everyone understood the consumer problem.

People already buy vitamin C.

They already buy zinc.

They already think about vitamin D.

They already reach for immune-support products during travel, stressful periods, busy seasons, and times when they feel run down.

We wanted to build something more deliberate.

So the formula developed around a defined purpose: support normal immune function while also fitting into the reality of everyday life.

Each ingredient had to justify its place.

The dose had to make sense.

The delivery format had to work.

The product had to taste good enough that people would actually use it.

And the claims had to stay within what the evidence could responsibly support.

That product-development process shaped the company as much as the company shaped the product.

We Care About the Details Consumers May Never See

A finished box hides a lot of work.

There are ingredient forms to evaluate.

Suppliers to consider.

Doses to debate.

Stability questions.

Flavor issues.

Packaging decisions.

Manufacturing constraints.

Testing requirements.

Claims review.

Labeling.

Legal review.

Quality specifications.

Those decisions are not always visible to the customer.

We still think they matter.

We wanted to build a company where the unseen work is part of the value.

That mindset influences how we think about everything from formulation to manufacturing to education.

We Also Wanted the Brand to Feel Human

CodeMD is physician-led, but we never wanted it to feel clinical in a cold or inaccessible way.

Healthcare can sometimes create distance.

Wellness can sometimes drift too far in the opposite direction.

We wanted CodeMD to sit somewhere useful between the two.

Serious about science.

Easy to understand.

Thoughtful about health.

Warm enough to feel like it belongs in real life.

That balance shapes the brand visually, verbally, and culturally.

It is why our products are designed for homes, kitchens, gym bags, workdays, travel, and daily routines.

Health does not happen only in an exam room.

Why “The Difference Is MD™”

Our tagline came out of the same idea.

The Difference is MD.™

It is not meant to suggest that a medical degree makes every decision automatically correct.

It means physician judgment changes the questions we ask.

What is this ingredient for?

Does the dose make sense?

What evidence supports it?

What should we avoid claiming?

Who should use it?

Who should ask a physician first?

What new research should change our thinking?

We want the MD to be visible in the process, not just in the branding.

Physician-Led Still Means Collaborative

CodeMD is not built around one person's expertise.

A physician brings one perspective.

A pharmacist brings another.

Manufacturing teams understand production, stability, scale, and ingredient behavior.

Quality teams understand specifications and testing.

Regulatory and legal professionals understand the framework in which products and claims must operate.

Creative and communications teams help translate complex information into something people can actually use.

Our goal is not to make one person the smartest voice in the room.

It is to bring the right people into the room.

We Expect to Keep Learning

The science will change.

Products will evolve.

Some ingredients will gain stronger evidence.

Others may become less compelling.

Manufacturing technologies will improve.

Consumer needs will change.

We want CodeMD to be able to change with that information.

That means revisiting formulations.

Updating educational content.

Reconsidering claims.

Listening to customers.

Listening to physicians and pharmacists.

Paying attention to new research.

A company that says it follows evidence should be willing to be changed by evidence.

We Want Consumers to Ask Better Questions

One of our broader goals with CodeMD is not simply to sell supplements.

We want people to become more educated about their own health, and where marketing isn’t backed by science, even if it says it is.

We want consumers to look at a Supplement Facts panel and ask what the dose means.

We want them to recognize that “clinically studied” needs context.

We want them to think about total intake.

We want them to ask whether a product fits into their diet, medications, health history, and actual needs.

We want them to know when it makes sense to talk to a physician or pharmacist.

If CodeMD can help make those questions more normal, that matters to us.

The Company We Are Trying to Build

We are still early.

That is exciting.

It also creates responsibility.

The decisions we make now become the habits of the company later.

We want CodeMD to grow into a trusted national wellness brand without losing the principles that made us want to build it in the first place.

That means keeping physician leadership substantive.

Keeping scientific review part of formulation.

Keeping claims measured.

Keeping quality expectations high.

Keeping the consumer's health more important than the next piece of marketing copy.

We will not get every decision perfectly right.

No company does.

But we want the process behind those decisions to be thoughtful, transparent, and open to revision.

Bottom Line

We built CodeMD because we believe people deserve a more credible way to navigate supplements and everyday wellness.

They deserve products with a clear purpose.

They deserve to know why ingredients were selected.

They deserve doses that can be explained.

They deserve health information that acknowledges uncertainty.

And they deserve physicians who are willing to participate in the wellness conversation without pretending supplements can replace medicine or the foundations of good health.

CodeMD is our attempt to build that kind of company.

We are starting with supplements.

The larger goal is trust.
